Blog Tour: Gathering Frost by Kaitlyn Davis

Gathering Frost (Once Upon A Curse #1)
By: Kaitlyn Davis
Release Date: 02/17/15

Summary from Goodreads:

Will his kiss be enough to revive her frozen heart?

Once Upon A Time meets La Femme Nikita in GATHERING FROST, a dystopian romance from bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis that reimagines the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty.

Jade was only a little girl when the earthquake struck. Before her eyes, half of New York City disappeared, replaced by a village that seemed torn out of a storybook. Horses and carriages. Cobblestone streets. A towering castle. And, above all, a queen with the magical ability to strip emotions away.

Ten years later and Jade has forgotten what it is to feel, to care...even to love. Working as a member of the queen's guard, she spends most of her time on the city wall staring at the crumbling skyscrapers of old New York. But everything changes when the queen's runaway son, Prince Asher, returns. Jade is tasked with an unusual mission--to let the Prince capture her, to make him trust her, and then to betray his secrets to the crown. In return, she'll earn her freedom. But life outside the queen's realm is more than Jade bargained for. Under Asher's relentless taunts, her blood begins to boil. Under his piercing gaze, her heart begins to flutter. And the more her icy soul begins to thaw, the more Jade comes to question everything she's ever known--and, more importantly, whose side she's really on.

My Review:

Initial Thoughts: I absolutely loved it! I love retellings and I love a wonderful plot and characters. I was completely into the story and had such a hard time pulling away from this beauty. I can't stop saying enough how much I enjoyed Gathering Frost.

The Characters: I really loved Jade. For some reason, I just connected with her from the start which I thought would be hard because she is emotionless, but nope, not the case. Maybe it was because I just knew she would be a good person with a kind heart which she is. She's a great fighter as well as a really caring person even though she doesn't see herself with high regard. Jade felt completely genuine and I adored her for that.

Asher. Well swoon is all I can say! He's probably my favorite part of the story! Probably because he's the type of guy I like to see in books. He's really sweet, smart, and willingly to give his life up for others. I also loved how he helped Jade through her transition from the Queen's spell and was always kind and loving to her. He was perfect!

"You were so beautiful, but so hard, so cold. When I looked at you, I saw caged fire. Your spark was almost gone. It was smothered, slowly dying. And all I wanted to do was set you free." ~ Asher

The Story: The book starts off with Jade as a little girl in New York as the modern world and a older, magical world cross over and combine. The Queen from this older world takes over and anyone put under her spell is emotionless and Jade was one of the first be put under. Years later, Jade a trained fighter and still emotionless, goes out to check on some explosion that was triggered by the perimeter and that is where she meets Asher, the Queen's son who had ran away as a little boy and was never seen of again. Of course she goes to the Queen and tells her she saw his son and the Queen wants Jade to do something about this. Now I'll leave the rest of the story for you to find out but believe me, it's full of love and intrigue and mystery and absolutely wonderful!

The Romance: Jade and Asher's romance starts slow because well, Jade is emotionless and it's hard to love when you don't feel anything. When she does start getting her emotions back, their interactions are just so cute and love how they work together even though they still have secrets that they hide. So their relationship develops over the course of the book and Jade and Asher are so wonderful together. I love them soooo much. Everyone needs an Asher in their lives.

End Thoughts: Loved it! It's a great retelling and I think everyone can and should read Gathering Frost. Read it. It's an amazing story and I loved it. 5 stars.

About the Author: I've always been a writer. I grew up duct taping my novels together, started writing complete manuscripts in high school and studied creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. Upon graduating, I decided it was finally time to actually give my dream career a chance. So, of course, I started writing a young adult paranormal romance series -- and no, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon. I've been a true paranormal supporter for my entire life! I blame my obsession almost completely on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my all-time favorite television show. And, before you ask: Yes, I own every season... even the post WB ones! I especially challenge anyone to watch the first three seasons and not fall in love with Angel, securing a lifelong love of vampires! Other culprits of my paranormal obsession are some of my favorite authors: JK Rowling, Raymond Feist, Meg Cabot, Richelle Mead, Lynne Ewing and Tamora Pierce.

"A wickedly romantic story that will have you cheering for Lisa Gail Green’s addictive storytelling. SOUL CROSSED is devilishly delicious!" — Martina Boone, author of COMPULSION and the Heirs of Watson Island trilogy

"Soul Crossed blurs the lines between good and evil with addictive characters and plot that will have you eagerly turning the pages." ~Kelly Hashway, author of the Touch of Death series.

My Review:

"Perhaps she meant for me to save the boy behind him."

Initial Thoughts: I've always had a thing for forbidden romances. I mean, who wouldn't? I know for the most part that they end in HEAs but I love reading about the journey to get to that end, and I really enjoyed following Grace and Josh's journey.

The Characters & Story: Grace and Josh both die and end up in Heaven and Hell respectively. Josh decides to become a demon and Grace and angel. Their first task to save or damn a certain person's soul and that person is Cam, also known as the Anti-Christ. He just hasn't quite reached that point yet.

The short chapters alternate between Grace and Josh's point of view and it was interesting and funny sometimes too being able to see each others side and the different characters on each side and their roles. A really wonderful part of the book I thought, was that there is great character development. These characters had depth and for the case with Cam. It was utterly fascinating how he was able to act so differently with Grace and be sweet and light yet around Josh be scary and dark. *shudders* Great development I tell you. Not to mention great change too in people, like Josh who's completely full of himself in the start.

"I wait until she catches my eye, then wink. It was inevitable she'd look over eventually. I mean, I am sitting right behind the dork and I mean, I'm me."

Well that's Josh for you but the great part of books is that we get to see characters change and develop! Yay, now you must read it to see how this happens for Josh and Grace and just everyone in Soul Crossed.

Now, I'll just add that the romance isn't the complete focus of the story. Saving, or guess damning too, Cam's soul is a huge part. But I think both aspects of the story worked well together to create a fast moving plot with twists and revelations and mystery along the way.

End Thoughts: There is great character development as well as many surprises throughout Soul Crossed. The short chapters did take me awhile to get used to but they did make they story feel like it was speeding by, in a good way. And of course there is forbidden romance and it was hard to stop because I just wanted to see how everything would work out! Soul Crossed is a really easy, fun, and thoughtful book. 4 stars.

Blog Tour: Heartlines by S. G. Holster

Summary: Heartlines is not a standalone book. It is only meant to be read after first reading Thirty Seconds To Die and Terrible Lies.

Sometimes in battle surrender is the strongest move of all.

Brett Owen, the son of a Sentori leader, promised himself he’d never do the work of his brotherhood - killing reborn souls. He’d been naïve to make such a vow. He’d been naïve about a lot of things – such as the bond of family and love.

Taunted by a Sentori hunter, Brett does whatever he can to survive, even if it means embracing his dark Sentori side and earning the unwanted attention of the Sentori leaders. His life had never looked so frantic. And all the while, his true family is infecting his heart and mind.

When his heart is tied to an unexpected soul, he finds himself fighting for a future he desperately wants to live to see. It becomes clear that whatever freedoms Brett is hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Fragile lives that had been carefully woven together will be ripped apart swiftly and easily.

Faith is betrayed.

Remorse and innocence intertwine.

Fate and chance collide to mend the tattered strands of Brett’s heart in the shocking conclusion to the Thirty Seconds To Die series.

Excerpt:

“I loved his enormous aptitude for compassion, adoration and respect. That was his way of showing love. He lacked the capacity for wickedness, and that caressed my belief that he might just be an angel. My angel.” ― S.G. Holster, Thirty Seconds to Die

Thirty Seconds to Die:

Lexi Flynn thought she could hide from her dreams.

She thought her fears were all in her imagination.

She couldn't imagine that after everything she'd been through, she could fall in love.

She was wrong.

For Lexi, life had always been - normal. But it only took one moment to change everything. Her life quickly becomes the opposite of normal when Ren Miller moves to the small community where she lives. Mysterious, handsome, and dangerously charming, Lexi discovers Ren is no stranger. They've met before - in another life.

When Ren pulls her into his bizarre world of past lives and secret societies, all bets are off. They become the targets of the Sentori, an ancient, secret society who believes it must protect the sanctity humankind by killing those like Lexi and Ren, those who are reborn.

If your life was all you had to give, wouldn't you give it to save the only person you ever loved?

Thirty Seconds to Die draws the reader deeply into a story of danger and flight, of love and hate, and of the extraordinary power of the spirit - human or otherwise.

My Review:

Initial Thoughts: Anomaly was really refreshing to read. It had action, fun and quirky characters that have powers that are really awesome, romance, plot twists, humor... It had a bit of everything and that everything fit together pretty well.

The Characters: Josie. I really liked Josie. She was nerdy (a language I speak and understand perfectly), funny, sweet, a thinker, strong-willed, honest, does what's right, and still only a seventeen year old girl. She was a really well developed, likable character!
Reid. I don't know what it is recently about me just falling in love with the main guy when the first words out of his mouth are swear words but...seriously, I am, not that I'm complaining, but Reid is no exception. First words he says: "Are you sh*tting me?" It must have been the whole situation but I fell in love right then and there. Now don't worry, he's a pretty awesome guy who is also sweet and works really hard and even seems to have a crush on Josie. It's pretty adorable. And he's pretty hot too.

The Story: Josie has been having a really crappy birthday. Just one bad thing after the other until, hello, new hot dude on a motorcycle (that sounds really cliche when I put it like that). But Reid and his friend Santos pulling into school is only the beginning for Josie. Josie has started exhibiting powers that she has no idea she had and the weird mishaps that happen, she just convinces herself they were nothing. But Reid was sent by her mother to help train her and hone her abilities. But there are lots of twists and, of course, secrets and lies hidden and interwoven throughout the book that made it so exciting!

The abilities in this book are really cool. It basically that whatever you’ve seen, you visualize and then Push that image and it becomes real. You can then also retract the image and make the object disappear. How it’s explained in the book made perfect sense to me, then again I’m also a very sciencey person, but you all would still understand it too! So in the book, there are people who can Push, people who can Retract, and people who can do both, which is rare. Those that can do both are called...anomalies! And in my opinion get the better end of the deal :) There are consequences to using too much of one’s powers to quickly though. Eventually everyone loses their abilities, it’s just a matter of when.

The Romance: The book is told in alternating POV between Josie and Reid. It was great seeing where both of them were coming from and if they had anything to hide from the other, which Reid does... So they both had issues they had to work out but I liked how well they worked together whether it be in training or just in general. They have a very solid relationship though it might have taken a bit of tug-o-war on both ends to get to that point, darn stubborn people. In the end, they work well together, and are sweet, funny, and lovable.

End Thoughts: I had lots of fun reading Anomaly. I laughed a lot and totally did *not* cry a few times either. I would recommend this for anyone if it’s something you like to read about. Well done! 4.5 stars.

Excerpt:
“When I first saw you, you were so stunning I couldn’t think straight,” Sam began.
“When you first saw me you were looking at my ass,” I reminded him.
“Okay, you’re right.” Sam admitted with his hands in surrender. “But in my defense, it is a really fine ass.”
I rolled my eyes and swallowed a flattered laugh.
He continued, “But as the weeks went on, I saw that your intelligence matched your beauty, and Jolie, combined … you left me breathless. I had to get to know you. Then when you got sick behind More Hall, you showed so much strength …”
“Strength? I freaked out and puked all over you.”
“You fell apart and pulled yourself back together again. That took raw guts, Jolie. Trust me, I’ve known a couple people who’ve lived through some nasty things. It takes a hell of a lot of strength to get to the other side of it.”
I worried my bottom lip. He saw me as beautiful and strong?
“I can see the pain behind your eyes and the shadow you’re trying to live with—twenty-six years old with a PhD—you stopped living at some point and became driven. And your clothes—you’re trying to be invisible, which is virtually impossible for you because you have an amazing body.” He cocked an eyebrow at me, and if I had felt any anger at his intuition and bold assessment, it melted. “I want to know you. So, are you going to give our friendship a chance?”
In six years no one had ever done this to me, made me want to come out of the hiding place I’d built. I knew my voice would be pained and small but I spoke anyway.
     “How do we do it?”
I expected his face to light up with his telltale smile, but it didn’t. Instead he became really serious. “No plan, Jolie. We live for each moment, each day. We find now and hold ourselves in that space until we’re ready to make a new one.”
“Okay … Sam. Friends.” I held out my hand to his.
He regarded it for a moment, took it like he was about to shake it, then said, “Ah, what the hell,” and yanked me up against him, putting his arms around me and folding me into a deep hug.
I liked the feel of him very much.
