Review: Undertow by K.R. Conway

Summary: Luckless Eila is unknowingly the last of her kind: Rare. Gifted. Breakable. Stunning Raef is her kind's historic enemy: Soulless. Lethal. Lost. A legendary death 160 years before would set their lives to collide, forcing a beautiful killer to become a savior, a simple wallflower to become a warrior, and ruthless destiny to become a death sentence.

Seventeen-year-old Eila Walker’s new home has defied the brutal Atlantic for over 160 years. Abandoned since her 4th great grandmother Elizabeth vanished, the town legend declares that she drowned . . . or was struck by lightning.

Unbeknownst to the town and Eila, however, is that someone does know what really happened to Elizabeth, and he has returned, determined to protect the last surviving Walker from a history of violence.

But what starts out as a quest for redemption, evolves into something more and soon young guardian, Raef, is forced to reveal the truth to Eila. As hidden secrets about their warring
families come to light, Eila begins to realize that she may be their best shot at survival, even if it means following in her grandmother’s fearless footsteps to save her killer bodyguard.

Initial Thoughts: This book is one of the best books I have ever read. Everything was developed and executed perfectly - the story, the main characters, the other main characters, everything. I could feel the emotions of the characters falling from the pages and into my heart the whole book. It was absolutely amazing.

The Characters: Eila (pronounced Eye-la) was a wonderful character. She was strong, protective, had a take-no-crap attitute, and loved her family and friends. She was very easy to connect to. I loved seeing through her eyes all the challenges she had to face, because nothing seemed to bring her down and she was always understanding of what was happening.

Raef. Where to start with this wonderful guy? Well, he is so amazing and protective that it's hard not to love him. I mean who doesn't love a character who is protective, sweet, funny, and loving towards others? I sure do and Raef was a great example of that!

MJ, Ana, and Kian are all other main characters. MJ is the funniest and sweetest person ever. He was always happy and light-hearted and kept everyone's spirits up. Ana is a tough girl who loves those close to her and is a great friend to Eila. Kian is the character that radiates "Don't talk to me unless you want to live" kind of warmth but is just as great as all the others.

The Story: Eila had recently moved to a new state and home but that isn't the biggest shock that comes her way. She meets MJ and Ana and becomes friends with them quite easily. But strange things already start happening. Sometimes Raef's eyes turn black or she thinks she sees a shadow watching her house or MJ and Ana act is they know something that Eila doesn't.

Turns out MJ can shapeshift but has only mastered a very big dog form. Ana can read thoughts but needs skin contact and can also influence/push someone to do something.

Eila is Lunaterra, the last of her kind and basically the only thing that can kill the Mortis which are immortal soulless humans that steal the souls of other people and need the souls to live, in the process killing whosever soul they took. Lunaterra and Mortis are eternal enemies so the Mortis have always hunted the Lunaterra and vice versa. But they thought all the Lunaterra were gone. As it so happens, there is one left, and now Eila is being targeted but has two Mortis who are willing to protect her. Raef and Kian are Mortis but have a unique background that makes them not power hungry killing machines.

The Romance: Even though Eila and Raef are enemies by nature, they are just perfect together! The love that Raef has for Eila literally just oozes off the pages. And how Eila loves Raef back with the same amount of conviction...I could feel how strong their emotions were for each other throughout the book and it was written beautifully. From start to finish, I loved them, their story, and everything that happened to and for them as well!

End Thoughts: This story is full of so much action, mystery, suspense, laughter, and heartbreak, that I absolutely loved it! I couldn't have asked for a more amazing book. 5 stars!!
