Monday Recs. - 6/30/14

This week I'm recommending a series that anyone can read and I know adults who have read and enjoyed these books. The Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter is just the best. My favorite books are 2, 4, and 6...funny I just noticed that...that doesn't mean the other ones aren't good, those are just my favorite! They really just kept getting better and better with each book. And since all the books are out, you won't ever have to feel the frustration of waiting for the next book. I have very little patience when it comes to books, otherwise I'm good at waiting. Happy Reading!

Summary: Cammie Morgan is a student at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, a fairly typical all-girls school-that is, if every school taught advanced martial arts in PE and the latest in chemical warfare in science, and students received extra credit for breaking CIA codes in computer class. The Gallagher Academy might claim to be a school for geniuses but it's really a school for spies. Even though Cammie is fluent in fourteen languages and capable of killing a man in seven different ways, she has no idea what to do when she meets an ordinary boy who thinks she's an ordinary girl. Sure, she can tap his phone, hack into his computer, or track him through town with the skill of a real "pavement artist"-but can she maneuver a relationship with someone who can never know the truth about her?

Cammie Morgan may be an elite spy-in-training, but in her sophomore year, she's on her most dangerous mission-falling in love.

Review: You Make Me by Erin McCarthy

Summary: The guy she wants…

Growing up on the coast of Maine with a revolving door of foster siblings, Caitlyn Michaud spent one intense and passionate year falling in love with her foster brother, Heath. Then he left without a word. The betrayal devastated Caitlyn and made her vow to forget the compelling bad boy. But forgetting his sensual touch and their deep all-consuming friendship is easier said than done.

Isn’t the guy she needs…

Determined to move on, in college Caitlyn has risen above her small town impoverished roots and has joined a sorority, reinvented her appearance, and landed the right boyfriend. Pre-law major and frat president, Ethan, is thoughtful and always laughing, and he makes her feel happy, calm. He also gives her the social acceptance she craves.

But the perfect world she tried so hard to attain is ripped apart when Heath appears one night out of nowhere. Caitlyn remembers all the reasons why she loves him, even if they don’t make sense to anyone but her. Out of the military, Heath is as brooding and intense as ever, and he is determined not only to win her back, but to exact revenge on everyone who kept him from her…

And when one love allows her to breathe, but the other feels as essential to her life as air, how does she choose between them?

**I received a copy from Xpresso Book Tours (thank you!)  in exchange for an honest review**

Initial Thoughts: I loved how this book turned out. I mean with that summary and the author starting out with a "thank you to Emily Bronte" I had no idea how what was going to be the end result. But this definitely exceeded my expectations and I'm so very happy with this book.

The Characters: Cat grew up in Maine, on an island, and in a family that always had foster kids coming and going. Her father only had one hand and her mother had problems as well. Growing up Cat was very free spirited. One day a new foster child shows up and that person is Heath. At first he ignores everyone but then after some time with Cat, warms up to her and this then is the beginning of their friendship which grows into love. But one day Heath just leaves without a word and Cat has no idea what happened to him for four years.

The Story: Now in college, Cat changed who she was because she wanted to leave behind her youth and become a "better" person who was going to get a respectable degree and make money and have a stable home and life. Since Heath has been gone for four years, Cat has tried to move on. She has a boyfriend now who proposes to her in the first chapter. That night also happens to be the night that Heath comes back.

That night is also the start of everything. Cat is completely confused. She just got engaged but she also remember how much she loves Heath since she really never stopped loving him just tried to forget and move on. But she also loves the guy she's engaged to. I have to admit, Ethan, her fiance, never worked for me. He was a nice guy, but I didn't see any connection or "rightness" between him and Cat. There was also the fact that he was rich and had a stable family which appealed to Cat initially (not why she is with him). Now I said she loved him but it was a "safe" love and relationship which Cat really wanted having not had a stable family and poor childhood. But what she discovers over the book is that she had that and more with Heath.

The Romance: Okay so I'm going to have to spoil the book a bit, but really you know it's going to happen ... Cat and Ethan break up, BUT it's not over Heath (just a little) but there are other problems between them that lead to it. So with that, Heath and Cat get back together. I know it sounds like Cat is a bad person for getting together with someone right after she got out of an engagement, but that's why you need to read the book to get the whole story! Anyways, Cat and Heath's relationship already had a solid base and love to it and it only continues through the book. They had the connection and rightness between them that I wanted to see and the author developed it really well.

"A wife, a woman, isn't a commodity, she's a gift." His voice was impassioned, his grip firm. "And if you treat her right, she'll love you better than you ever deserve, and that's you with me. You love me better than I'll ever deserve." ~ Heath

End Thoughts: You Make Me was a very well done story.  It was easy to understand the emotions, thoughts, and actions that were thrown around. I really enjoyed it and in the end ended up loving it! 4.5 stars!

EXCERPT:
“What I want is for you to want me like I want you!”
I clamp a hand to my mouth. Regret slaps me in the face.
Javier pulls my hand away. His stare takes in all of me. My eyes. My lips. I’m embarrassed by what I said. I’m embarrassed by my ridiculous heart, which thumps loudly, echoing his every touch.
“You want me, mami?”
Yes. In the deepest parts of my bones, yes.
Silence.
“Answer me.” His voice is demanding.
“No,” I say, stubborn.
A grin crawls across his face.
“I owe you an apology,” he says. “I couldn’t talk to you earlier. Wanted to. But I couldn’t. You understand?”
“Not at all.”
Javier’s warmth reminds me of the water. Of wanting to jump in. I’d do anything to cool off.
“If I explain it to you, will you remember in the morning?”
“Probably not,” I answer honestly. “But then again, you’re hard to forget.”

Friday Favorites - 6/27/14

So this past week I read eight books I most of them were really good reads. I don't read books I wouldn't be interested in but that's not saying much because I will read practically anything and I like it. It's really hard for me to dislike or hate a book. Back to the point I'll just be picking two favorite reads from this past week. One is called Make It Count by Megan Erickson. This one I stayed up til almost five in the morning to read - I'm a night person...The next one is Moon Called by Patricia Briggs.

Summary: Kat Caruso wishes her brain had a return policy, or at least a complaint hot-line. The defective organ is constantly distracted, terrible at statistics, and absolutely flooded with inappropriate thoughts about her boyfriend’s gorgeous best friend, Alec…who just so happens to be her brand new math tutor. Who knew nerd was so hot?

Kat usually goes through tutors like she does boyfriends—both always seem to bail when they realize how hopeless she is. It’s safer for her heart to keep everyone at arm’s reach. But Alec is always stepping just a little too close.

Alec Stone should not be fantasizing about Kat. She’s adorable, unbelievably witty, and completely off limits. He’d never stab his best friend in the back…

But when secrets are revealed, the lines of loyalty are blurred. To make it count, Alec must learn messy human emotions can’t be solved like a trigonometry function. And Kat has to trust Alec may be the first guy to want her for who she is, and not in spite of it.

Summary: Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy's next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy's connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water...

Waiting On Wednesday - 6/25/14

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Hello everyone! This week I'm waiting for a book with magic and manipulating time. So of course I'm already hooked and excited for. It's called Gates of Thread and Stone by Lori M. Lee. Happy Reading!

Summary: In the Labyrinth, we had a saying: keep silent, keep still, keep safe.

In a city of walls and secrets, where only one man is supposed to possess magic, seventeen-year-old Kai struggles to keep hidden her own secret—she can manipulate the threads of time. When Kai was eight, she was found by Reev on the riverbank, and her “brother” has taken care of her ever since. Kai doesn’t know where her ability comes from—or where shecame from. All that matters is that she and Reev stay together, and maybe one day move out of the freight container they call home, away from the metal walls of the Labyrinth. Kai’s only friend is Avan, the shopkeeper’s son with the scandalous reputation that both frightens and intrigues her.

Then Reev disappears. When keeping silent and safe means losing him forever, Kai vows to do whatever it takes to find him. She will leave the only home she’s ever known and risk getting caught up in a revolution centuries in the making. But to save Reev, Kai must unravel the threads of her past and face shocking truths about her brother, her friendship with Avan, and her unique power.

DireAbout DIRE: Dire: The Dire Wolves Chronicles Gage was the first guy I ever wanted. He was my first crush and my first fantasy, but he wasn't my first in any other way because he never saw me as anything more than a friend— at least not until the night that changed everything. It was all Gage's fault. He insisted we drive through the storm and take the back roads. By the time the storm hit full force we had no chance. One night of snowbound sex changed our relationship forever. The problem was at the same time I caught another guy’s attention. This other guy happens to be the alpha of a pack of shifter wolves.

Teaser Tuesday - 6/24/14

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I'm currently reading a trilogy called The Grisha by Leigh Bardugo. So my teaser is from the second book Siege and Storm (but the summary will be for the first book). A little context for the teaser is that the main character is being given advice which leads up to the teaser. Happy Reading!

"You'll do fine," he said. "Just calm down."
I let out a squawk of frustration. I wanted to throttle him so badly my fingers itched.
"Oh, and the easiest way to make someone furious is to tell her to calm down."

Review: #scandal by Sarah Ochler

Summary: Lucy’s learned some important lessons from tabloid darling Jayla Heart’s all-too-public blunders: Avoid the spotlight, don’t feed the Internet trolls, and keep your secrets secret. The policy has served Lucy well all through high school, so when her best friend Ellie gets sick before prom and begs her to step in as Cole’s date, she accepts with a smile, silencing about ten different reservations. Like the one where she’d rather stay home shredding online zombies. And the one where she hates playing dress-up. And especially the one where she’s been secretly in love with Cole since the dawn of time.

When Cole surprises her at the after party with a kiss under the stars, it’s everything Lucy has ever dreamed of… and the biggest BFF deal-breaker ever. Despite Cole’s lingering sweetness, Lucy knows they’ll have to ’fess up to Ellie. But before they get the chance, Lucy’s own Facebook profile mysteriously explodes with compromising pics of her and Cole, along with tons of other students’ party indiscretions. Tagged. Liked. And furiously viral.

By Monday morning, Lucy’s been branded a slut, a backstabber, and a narc, mired in a tabloid-worthy scandal just weeks before graduation.

Lucy’s been battling undead masses online long enough to know there’s only one way to survive a disaster of this magnitude: Stand up and fight. Game plan? Uncover and expose the Facebook hacker, win back her best friend’s trust, and graduate with a clean slate.

There’s just one snag—Cole. Turns out Lucy’s not the only one who’s been harboring unrequited love...

***

Initial Thoughts: Um, wow, okay. This book turned out to be completely different than I expected. I didn't think it was going to be as serious as it was. While I was surprised, I did enjoy it.

The Characters & Story: Okay, here's what you need to know...

  • Lucy goes to prom with best friend's boyfriend, Cole, because best friend was sick
  • Lucy has always liked said boyfriend
  • Lucy and Cole go to the after prom thing at Cole's cabin with other classmates
  • Lucy has no idea Cole and best friend broke up
  • Lucy and Cole kiss but still has no idea about the break up and feels guilty
  • Lucy is guilty so she kisses another guy to try to forget
  • Lucy and Cole just end up going to his room in the cabin and go to sleep (nothing else...) to get away from the party
Meanwhile, someone stole Lucy's phone, took pictures of everything said above and more, uploaded everything from the party from her facebook account and by Monday everyone is mad at her and calling her slut and thinks she did everything on purpose. Her friends turn their backs on her and so does everyone else besides Cole. Not to mention, the principal thinks Lucy is bullying people because of the photos that were uploaded about the party. So basically, Lucy's life sucks and she has no idea what to do. And the rest of the book is trying to find out who was behind everything to clear her name and deal with A LOT of bullying.

The Romance: Lucy and Cole met at the beginning of their freshman year because they lived really close together. They spent a lot of time together so Lucy always had a crush on him but never did anything about being 15! But best friend Ellie comes in and asks Cole out, says yes, and then they start a relationship. But it hadn't been working out for awhile and Lucy never knew. Now we see glimpses of Cole and Lucy's relationship before he started dating Ellie and you could see how they would like each other. Skip ahead to after prom and Lucy's only friend is Cole. So they hang out a lot and it's sweet, BUT there isn't as much as I hoped there would be. They had a base to their relationship from when they were freshman but now as seniors, I felt like some more development was missing between the two. If there had been more, the story would've been a lot better!

End Thoughts: While the story was good and I enjoyed it, I really wish there would have been a bit more development between the characters so I could have connected better to the story. That said, there was still good things about the book and it felt pretty realistic as well as had some good messages in it too! 3.5-4 stars (<<< because I can't make up my mind!).

Monday Recs. - 6/23/14

On this week's Monday Recommendation I have a cute and fabulous contemporary book that I read this year and absolutely fell in love with. It's called My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick. The main characters are funny and so mature and even the secondary characters were written well and with depth. I loved it! Happy Reading!

Summary: The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not. Loud, messy, affectionate. And every day from her rooftop perch, Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them . . . until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs up next to her and changes everything.

As the two fall fiercely for each other, stumbling through the awkwardness and awesomeness of first love, Jase's family embraces Samantha - even as she keeps him a secret from her own. Then something unthinkable happens, and the bottom drops out of Samantha's world. She's suddenly faced with an impossible decision. Which perfect family will save her? Or is it time she saved herself?

A transporting debut about family, friendship, first romance, and how to be true to one person you love without betraying another.

they’ll fight like hell to keep each other.

Full Jacket:

Excerpt:
“I don’t know if I can even sleep tonight,” I muttered and rubbed at my arms. They were restless. “I can already feel myself twitching.”
Tomorrow…” Dad began, but stopped. He sighed forcefully and tightened his fists. “I’ll go find him and make him come here if he doesn’t come on his own.”
“Dad, you didn’t see him. He was…” I bit into my lip hard. Just talking about him was making me ache all over. I closed my eyes and tried to breathe.
I heard Mom say, “Baby, I think we need to stop talking about this. It’s just making things worse for her.”
“I know, but…maybe I should go over there. Maybe I should try to find him and—you know what? No.” I looked up to find him looking down at me. “I’m not going to do that. It has to be his choice until it’s not. I’ll give him until tomorrow to be the good guy. If he doesn’t, then I’ll go get him and make him. I can tell by looking at you that you want to have faith in him.”
“You didn’t see him, Dad,” I reiterated. “He wanted this. He was worried about me. He’ll come. He’ll find me.” I hoped. “If what you said is true, then he didn’t choose any of what happened. He’s not a Watson.”
“But he’s lived with them his whole life,” Mom reasoned. “We have no idea the things they’ve done to him, the things they’ve made him do. We have to be cautious. You have to cautious.” She went into the kitchen and I heard a pill bottle shake before she came back. “Here. Take these. They’ll help you sleep tonight. They were Grans,” she said softly.
I ached as the pills went down. I heard Rodney coming in the back door loudly. Dad went right to him and put his hand on his chest to stop him. They whispered back and forth and Rodney looked at me over Dad’s shoulder. Dad wasn’t going to be able to stop him. He didn’t know that, but I did.
“Come on, Dad,” Rodney said gruffly and looked at him right in his face. “Move.”
He pushed his Champion gently in the shoulder and I watched Dad’s stunned face as he watched Rodney come and sweep we up in his big brotherly arms on the couch. He said low in my ear, but I knew that they still could hear, “Tell me who I have to hurt. Who is this guy and why isn’t he here with you right now?”
I looked at Dad and he looked so amused and bemused all at once. He waved me on and leaned his hip against the counter, pulling Mom into the ‘v’ of his legs so he could wrap his arms around her from behind. I heard her so sigh loud and hated that I was causing them so much distress.
“Seth,” I explained. “Seth Watson,” I said with as much gumption as I could muster.
His eyes rounded. I told him everything and he tightened his arms on me as he listened.
“Okay,” he said and kicked his shoes off the end of the couch. Mom was two seconds from scolding him when he asked, “So where is he? He should be here.”
Like fate usually worked, there was a knock on the front door. An insistent knock. Dad shot me a look before taking a loaded breath. I started to shake and stood from the couch quickly. It was him; I knew it like I knew my own name.
“Ava, wait,” he told me.
“Dad.”
“You, sit,” he said in his Champion voice. “I’ll answer and let him in. What if the Watsons were planning something and knew you’d run to the door to answer it thinking it was him? We know nothing about him yet. Until we do, we go at this with caution.” I sighed. I hated that I had to look at my significant with anything but reverence, but Daddy was right. I mean, I was the one that had run right out of the coffee shop this afternoon. “I mean it, baby girl,” he said softly.
Rodney turned me to look at him and held my upper arms in his hands. “If he hurts you, I can’t be held account for what I do.”
“I love you, you know that?” I replied and kissed his cheek. I tried to smile, but think I failed epically when he put one arm around my shoulders and tugged me close, as if to shield me from whatever or whoever was coming.
Dad had to know I was anxious—he didn’t make me wait. He went to the door quickly. I could hear them in the other room with deep, urgent tones. My significant.
And then there he was.

Waiting On Wednesday - 6/18/14

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm waiting for a book that not only looks amazing (the cover) but also sounds amazing and intriguing. I really am excited for it because who doesn't like magic and trying to stop ones own murder? Well I like it. Anyways this wonderful book is called Salt & Storm by Kendall Kulper.

Publication: September 23rd 2014
Summary: Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe wants only to take her rightful place as the witch of Prince Island, making the charms that keep the island’s whale men safe and prosperous at sea. But before she could learn how to control her power, her mother, the first Roe woman in centuries to turn her back on magic, stole Avery away from her grandmother. Avery must escape from her mother before her grandmother dies, taking with her the secrets of the Roes’ power.

When Avery awakens from a dream foretelling her own murder, she realizes time is running short—for her and for the people of her island, who, without the Roes, will lose their ships and the only life they know.

With the help of Tane, a tattooed harpoon boy from the Pacific Islands, Avery plots her escape from her mother and unravels the mysteries of her mother’s and grandmother’s pasts. Becoming a witch may prevent her murder and save her island from ruin, but Avery discovers it will also require a sacrifice she never expected—one she might not be able to make.
