ARC Review: The Here And Now by Ann Brashares

Summary: An unforgettable epic romantic thriller about a girl from the future who might be able to save the world . . . if she lets go of the one thing she’s found to hold on to.

Follow the rules. Remember what happened. Never fall in love.

This is the story of seventeen-year-old Prenna James, who immigrated to New York when she was twelve. Except Prenna didn’t come from a different country. She came from a different time—a future where a mosquito-borne illness has mutated into a pandemic, killing millions and leaving the world in ruins.

Prenna and the others who escaped to the present day must follow a strict set of rules: never reveal where they’re from, never interfere with history, and never, ever be intimate with anyone outside their community. Prenna does as she’s told, believing she can help prevent the plague that will one day ravage the earth.

But everything changes when Prenna falls for Ethan Jarves.

**I received a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**

Initial Thoughts: This book had two of my favorite types of things to find in books. Time traveling and forbidden romance! I was really glad to have found this because I thought it was a really well written book.

The Characters: Prenna came from the future along with others who wanted to escape their disease and blood plague infested world with hardly anyone left. No one could go outside and death had been everywhere. It was a really horrible place and when the few remaining scientists found a way to time travel - they took it. They come to the modern time and the leaders had tons of rules (okay twelve) set up but the rules didn't give them very much freedom. They could go outside, go to school, and have a safe life but never do what they want incase they upset the course of time. The leaders also don't really do anything about trying to change and help the future. Ethan had been fishing one day by a river and then all of a sudden he sees a strange disturbance in the air and next thing he knows, some girl is standing there. That was the day the people from the future came and the person Ethan had seen was Prenna. That was also how it got Ethan involved in everything that happens in the book.

The Story: The story starts with the prologue and this was about the day Prenna and everyone from the future came, which Ethan saw. Then it starts four years later when secrets are starting to be revealed. Prenna isn't always the best at following the rules. She's wishes she had more freedom and especially the ability to choose who she wants to be with, which would be Ethan because he's been her only friend who is a time native (people who actually belong in their time) and seems to understand her yet never asks any questions. He's always nice to her and always helping her. Prenna is also a little suspicious of her leaders because some how they always know everything they say and see. And whenever someone breaks a law, they disappear, but everyone knows they are dead. And then Ethan starts leading on to the fact that he knows that they are from the future. Then some homeless guy that she knows says that she needs to stop a murder by the next week (51714 <<I figured that out right away) to change the way the future is.

So Prenna's life gets a bit messed up. Turns out the homeless guy is from the future (I won't say who he is) and that he and Ethan have known and shared info between each other for awhile. So basically the rest of the story is about them trying to stop a murder or at least change something that way they can try to help the future somehow. I really liked how the end ended except for this one bit of knowledge you find out which could ruin something that I can't tell you!

The Romance: It's not the focus of the story but it is between Prenna and Ethan and I definitely think they are wonderful for each other. They have known each other for a few years but since one of the rules says you can't be with anyone outside of the community, Prenna couldn't do anything about it. But I guess that when you start breaking one rule, you start breaking more! I liked the bond the two shared!

End Thoughts: This was a great story and read. The plot and characters were well developed and it was very a enjoyable and fun read! I highly recommend it! 4.5 stars.
