Under Different Stars by Amy A. Bartol - Blog Tour

Title: Under Different Stars (Kricket #1)
Author: Amy A. Bartol
Genre: YA Dystopian
All she wants is a home, but can she find one...UNDER DIFFERENT STARS
Kricket Hollowell is normally not one to wish upon stars; she believes they’re rarely in her favor. Well versed at dodging caseworkers from Chicago’s foster care system, the past few years on her own have made Kricket an expert at the art of survival and blending in. With her 18th birthday fast approaching, she dreams of the day when she can stop running and find what her heart needs most: a home.
Trey Allairis hates Earth and doubts that anyone from his world can thrive here. What he’s learning of Kricket and her existence away from her true home only confirms his theory. But, when he and Kricket lie together under the stars of Ethar, counting them all may be easier than letting her go.
Kyon Ensin’s secrets number the stars; he knows more about Kricket's gifts than anyone and plans to possess her because of them. He also knows she’s more valuable than any fire in the night sky. He’ll move the heavens and align them all in order to make her his own.
When everything in their world can be broken, will Kricket rely upon love to save her under different stars?
Excerpt

Water swirls around me as I open my eyes. I shiver, realizing I’m in Trey’s arms. He’s standing chest deep in crystal blue water with Wayra pacing on the bank only steps away. Clutching Trey closer to me, my cheek remains on his shoulder. Watching a bead of water slip down his powerful neck, I hear Jax say, “She’s waking up.”
Trey, cupping his hand in the water, pours some of it over my hair. It drips down the sides of my face, cooling me. “Let’s get her out. I’ll get the visor and we can check her vitals.”
As Trey wades out of the pond with me in his arms, I try to lift my head from his shoulder. It makes me dizzy so I lay it back. It’s then I notice that I’m only in my bra and underwear. A blush creeps into my cheeks as I hug Trey tighter to me. Wayra meets us on the bank, draping a blanket over us. Trey sits down with me on his lap. He leans against a tree trunk holding me securely to his chest. Peeking at his face, he seems angry as he smoothes my hair back from my face.
Hurrying over with the visor that looks like grandma goggles, Trey sets them on my eyes. Everything is green as I gaze around at the water in front of us. Flashing green lights and readouts occupy the peripherals of the glasses, but the information is running faster than I can possibly read it.
“Ho!” Jax exclaims next to me.
Immediately, Trey’s arms tighten on me as he barks out, “What? How bad is it?”
“Naw, it’s not bad…it’s just…Kricket…” Jax breathes, like he’s in awe. “Look at this brain activity…it’s massive.”
“What do you mean?” Trey asks with relief in his tone.
Jax grins. “She’s lighting everything up. Look at her frontal lobe…it’s off the charts.”
“What does that mean? Is she healthy?” Trey growls.
Jax nods enthusiastically. “She’s healthy! We didn’t fry her with heat stroke, that’s for sure. Or, if we did, she’s got more brain activity than anyone I’ve ever seen to compensate for it,” he replies, sounding seriously geeked about it.
“Those things aren’t broken, are they?” Trey asks speculatively.
“No…here.” Jax pulls them off my face. “Wayra, come here.”
Wayra walks over and Jax puts the glasses on his eyes. “See! He’s normal, well, normal for him. See how it doesn’t light up in these areas?” he points out to Trey.
“Yes.”
“Now watch this,” he says, taking the glasses off of Wayra, he places them back on my face. “See? It’s like Christmas in Chicago with all those lights,” Jax says proudly.
“So that means she’s smart?”
Jax beams. “Yeah, she’s smart! She’s brilliant! There’s no telling what she can do.”
“If she’s so smart, why did she run until she almost popped? Why didn't she just tell us she needed to rest?” Wayra asks derisively.
“Personality flaw,” Trey replies. “She’s going to show us that she’s not weak.”
“She’s sitting right here,” I murmur, pulling the glasses off my face and handing them to Jax.

My Review

To start off, let me say that this book was absolutely amazing! I loved the idea behind it, the story, the characters, everything! It was written beautifully!

Now Kricket, the main character, is someone I really liked. She was strong and bold, but also needed others. She thought she didn't, but she did, but she was really well developed and really well liked and I totally related with her.
Kricket has been in hiding for a few years and can't wait until she is eighteen to be "free" but it's funny how irony works. Instead she was pulled into a whole other universe (literally). But when this happens you are introduced to tons of other characters like Trey, Jax, and Wayra, who I ALL love might I mention! Jax and Wayra are so funny that I was laughing so many times throughout the book, plus they were in awe of Kricket, because she has grown up on earth her whole life, which made them adorable and funny when they were around her. Trey is the lovely love interest. In the beginning he was closed off and reserved, because he is a soldier in his world, but as the story progresses, you see better, likeable, and loveable sides of him.

The book is full of action from the get-go. From running from strangers to running from other strangers to running away with strangers to new worlds and new rules and new wars and games. I couldn't put the book down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I wanted to know more about the enemy about people's gifts about who to trust and who was truly who. I wanted to know how everything was going to happen! I wanted to see how everything turned out which was why I couldn't stop reading. And as I read I loved falling in love with the characters like Jax and Wayra. I loved seeing the relationship between Kricket and Trey develop. I loved reading it and watching everything unfold and leaves you with answers and questions of the like. Of course in the end I felt like I has more questions than what I started with but that's because the story isn't ending but moving on into the next book which will only further the story.

Overall I loved the whole story, the suspense and action, the love, the funny moments, the strength of all the characters good and bad. The story was written with so much thought and emotion you can't help but fall in love with it! I'm really excited for the rest of the series to unfold! 5/5 stars for a wonderfully written book!

Author Bio

I live in Michigan with my husband and our two sons. My family is very supportive of my writing. When I’m writing, they often bring me the take-out menu so that I can call and order them dinner. They listen patiently when I talk about my characters like they’re real. They rarely roll their eyes when I tell them I’ll only be a second while I finish writing a chapter…and then they take off their coats. They ask me how the story is going when I surface after living for hours in a world of my own making. They have learned to accept my “writing uniform” consisting of a slightly unflattering pink fleece jacket, t-shirt, and black yoga pants. And they smile at my nerdy bookishness whenever I try to explain urban fantasy to them. In short, they get me, so they are perfect
and I am blessed.

Teaser Tuesday 12/17/13

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
So I'm currently reading The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin and here's a teaser!!
"Thanks," I said quietly. "I'm completely uncivilized." "Then I suppose I'm going to have to civilize you," Noah said, and I noticed then that the check had disappeared. One look at Noah told me he'd taken it. Very slick. I narrowed my eyes at him. "I was warned about you, you know." And with that half-smile that wrecked me, Noah said, "But you're here anyway."
Hehe those two are so cute and the scene takes place at a restaurant!
So in case you haven't heard of it I'll also give you a summary of the book and already more than half way through and it is really good!!
Summary: Mara Dyer believes life can't get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can. She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her strangely unharmed. There is. She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love. She's wrong.
This book is like, as someone has nicely put it, a "Psychological thriller with a paranormal twist" and it it really great so far and I can't wait to get to the end!!...and start the second book! Happy Reading!

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

Okay I'm just going to say that I've been really crappy with my blog the last two weeks. And you probably want to know why!Well probably not but here you go anyway..

 Excuses:

  1. I'm 16 and still in school! and break is coming up so I've been having exam after exam after exam for the last two weeks!
  2. I'm the oldest of six (<--- that's an excuse in and of itself!)
  3. My school gives about 3-5 hours a homework a night <------sucks majorly especially when a lot can just be busy work!!
  4. I go to school for 7 1/2 hrs....it feels really long to me...
  5. Blog posts can take around 30 - 60 minutes to make especially reviews
  6. Most of my excuses have to do with school
  7. I live in Minnesota so it's been below zero for who knows how long and I don't know where I'm going with this one....
  8. Hmmm...Oh I do Irish Dance (for 12 years and counting!!sorry it's something I'm really happy to have accomplished!) sooo I can have practice anywhere between 3hrs to 15hrs a week
  9. Life
So yeah I know these are excuses but seriously it doesn't take me too long to do posts like Teaser Tuesday and Waiting on Wednesday...And I haven't had time for those so I have been really really busy so this week it will get better and I'm sooooo sorry for no posts and getting behind! But since I have break in five days I have tons of reviews for you guys especially from ARCs (advanced reader copies) that I have gotten! So yeah sorry for being crappy but life gets busy sometimes I guess and I can't wait to write more posts! Happy Reading!!

Release Day Launch: Bitter Sweet Love

Bitter Sweet Love is the prequel novella to Jennifer’s new young adult fantasy series, The Dark Elements Series. The first full-length novel, White Hot Kiss, will be released February 25th.

Summary:
In a sizzling prequel novella to her new series The Dark Elements, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout draws readers into the extraordinary, irresistible world of Wardens and demons.
Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining the balance between good and evil. He was her everything…right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.
And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again…

Excerpt:
Moving lightning fast, Dez shifted and I was suddenly underneath him. His arms were on either side of my head, caging me in. Our bodies didn’t touch, but I felt him to the tips of my toes anyway.

The teasing grin disappeared when I dragged in a deep breath and my chest brushed his. Everything changed in an instant. The playful mood faded, replaced by primal heaviness. Our gazes collided and locked. Neither of us moved. His closeness sent a series of shivers skittering across my skin and made it hard to take slow, even breaths. My body tensed when his gaze dropped to my mouth.

He tilted his head to the side. “I… I honestly have no idea what we were talking about.”

“Good. Neither do I.”

He shifted his weight onto one arm, bring him closer. “Have you enjoyed your trip so far?”

“Yes.” I felt as if I couldn’t get enough air into my lungs.

“Good.” He lowered his head. His breath was minty as it moved across my cheek and then my lips. “I’m glad.”

I wasn’t really following the conversation and I wasn’t sure that he was fully aware of what was coming out of his mouth. I searched my hazy brain for something to say and wet my lips. I-

The sound that came out of Dez’s chest rumbled through me. A stuttered heartbeat passed and then his lips were on mine. There was nothing slow about this kiss. It scorched my skin and caused my body to stretch tight like a bowstring. The kiss deepened, spinning my senses. I shuddered when his hand curved over my shoulder and drifted down to my waist, his long fingers spreading out under the hem of my shirt, grazing the bare skin of my stomach.

I gasped, floored by the raw sensations pounding through my blood. My skin felt as if I was about to phase. Maybe I was.

“Jasmine,” he whispered, the word falling against my lips, and then his body was pressing mine into the mattress, heavy, sweet and hard.
